Adding up the cheapest valid pack of each of the 9 staples we watch, the basket this Friday lands at $66.55. Last Friday the same basket sat at $70.58 — this week is $4.03 lower than that. For each staple we take the cheaper of the PAK’nSAVE pick and the Woolworths pick at pack price, because the basket framing is about what you carry to the till, not a per-kilo abstraction. It isn’t a shopping list — nobody buys exactly one pack of every staple in a week. It’s a single number that tracks roughly how the cheap shelf moves week to week. We track it long enough and the line draws itself.

How we measure this

For each of the staples we watch, we take the cheaper of the PAK’nSAVE and Woolworths cheapest valid pack at pack price, then sum the lot. Pack price is the right basis here because a basket is what you carry to the till. Last week’s basket is shown when we have a complete prior snapshot for the same staples.
